I remember when I started making this mix that I wanted to open relatively strongly and, if anyone was looking at the tracklist, wonder why the hell it skipped from 1 to 3 without any indication of a hidden track. I found my solution there by way of Powderfinger and their tracks ‘Don’t Wanna Be Left Out’ and ‘Good-Day Ray’ which are effectively one track split in two. It worked really nicely, and for tracklist trainspotters, it made for a fun little experiment.
Once again, I decided to fill in the gaps with a hidden track, popping Killing Heidi’s ‘Heidilude 1’ at track 13, but given how well it made the tracklist flow, I committed a cardinal sin of popping an additional Killing Heidi song (‘Mascara’) just a few songs later. Given the former is instrumental and the latter is vocal, it didn’t matter too much, but it still bugs me.
Again, the musical selection is very triple j, ’00s-influenced, but I think it serves as a good mix.
Personally, the thing I’m most proud of here is the artwork. For that one, I recreated the artwork to Shellac’s 1000 Hurts album, which featured layout and illustration by David Babbitt, and was inspired by long play tape boxes by Ampex.
I always loved how simple and minimalist this one was, and as someone whose graphic design skills were incredibly amateur near the start, I figured this would be a good one with which to really test my rudimentary skills. I believe this may have been one of the first artworks completed after I began it, but I can’t really recall. Plus, it doesn’t really matter.
Lastly, the quote on the back flap comes from the lyrics of Gyroscope’s ‘Baby, I’m Gettin’ Better’’, and for those wanting to listen along on Spotify, the playlist is missing Milhouse’s ‘Cereal’, which is a song so good I’ve had to link it here for you to hear it.
