I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m not particularly a huge fan of the artwork to this mixtape.
I think at the time I was working on this one, I was really scraping the bottom of the barrel when it came to inspiration. “But isn’t this just Volume 5?” I hear you asking. Well, yes, but these weren’t designed chronologically. I actually think Volume 41 might have been the first, but I can’t confirm right now.
At the time I made this one, I think I’d realised there was a lot of variety in these mixes, so I did my best to share all that information. That’s why I mention that Volume Five (or M5, apparently a Sydney motorway, I’ve since learn) consists of two sides, is the fifth volume, features seven covers (or five, depending how you view it), and features 21 artists playing 23 songs.
Now, there’s a lot of covers here. Firstly, side one ends with The Fauves’ playing ‘Give Up Your Day Job’, but side two starts with Andrew Cox of The Fauves’ playing The Go-Betweens’ ‘Draining The Pool For You’. This means that my preferred rule of keeping bands alongside solo work falls apart on the cassette.
Secondly, it ends with the supergroup The Wrights performing all three parts of Stevie Wright’s ‘Evie’. Now, the original song is one long song (though it has occasionally been split for radio play), but The Wrights’ version is only available as three separate parts. So again, it’s either one or three covers depending how you view it. However, I only list it as one song in the artwork, meaning that technically the last two parts are hidden tracks? If that’s the case, I’m a tad foolish to mention all three parts in the title.
I do also enjoy how the cassette and CD versions are different given that the latter changes the artwork to read ‘Discs’ instead of ‘Sides’. I also don’t recall if it was an error that I didn’t make the ‘Please Enjoy’ part (a phrase I took from Beck’s ‘Hell Yes’ and have utilised in a lot of my work) blue. Live and learn, I guess.
Lastly, the quote on the back flap comes from the lyrics of City Riots’ ‘Wait For You’.
